Antlion Guardian

The Antlion Guardian is a previously unseen variant of the Antlion Guard. It is adapted to live in the dark, underground Antlion caverns. Apparently, only one Guardian stays in each cavern. The Guardian patrols the Nectarium, protecting the larval essences (which is used by Vortessence). Guardians also are very protective of Antlion Grubs, which are premature Antlions, and so fight ferociously to protect them. If the larval extract is taken, the Guard will do as much as it can to take back the extract. In Half-Life 2: Episode Two, a Guardian follows Gordon Freeman (who had taken the extract) outside, and battles him.
Because Guardians are what produce the larval extract, Vortigaunts have learned to keep them alive. Once they are killed, they cannot produce any more larval extract.
Vortigaunts refer to Guardians as the Ancient Guardians.
[edit] Capabilities
Guardians are generally Antlion Guards that produce a deadly neurotoxin (much like that of the Poison Headcrab). However, when you fight the Guardian outside in Freeman Pontifex, they don't have a neurotoxin effect. This is because the creature is essentially a reskinned Guard.
[edit] Tactics
When fighting the Guardian, be sure to keep a good distance away from it. Its headbutt attack is quite powerful, and can send you flying quite a distance. Its attacks also have a poisonous side effect, which make it even deadlier. Each attack reduces the player's health, regardless of the current amount, to 12 (but the Guardian, unlike the poison headcrab, can actually kill the player if continued damage is recieved).
When the Guardian chases you inside the caves, do not fight it or you will fail the mission. The narrow tunnels also don't offer much room to dodge around the guard and avoid its charge like usual so you should always take cover in the 'grub tunnels' instead. If you are being pursued, the guard is faster, even when sprinting; you can try to use the SMG's secondary grenade if necessary which will stun it for a few seconds if you can hit it in the 'face' (be wary of inflicting fatal damage though).
Once you fight it outside with another Antlion Guard, however, you will have to kill it.
[edit] Trivia
- According to the Orange Box Prima Guide, Guardians emit an odor that human beings cannot sense, but upon death, kills any remaining extract.
- The Orange Box Prima Guide also states that Antlion Guardians are Antlion Guards that have been mutated.
- The Antlion Guardian is essentially just a reskinned Guard.
