The Aperture Science Shredder is a device made of spinning gear-like blades that destroy anything on impact. It first appears in Portal 2 during the single-player campaign outside the Neurotoxin Generator, where is it shredding 'defective' turrets. Later, in Chapter 9, Wheatley opens a wall in front Chell, revealing a Shredder trap.
Shredders appear more often during the co-op campaign, where GLaDOS uses them as a hazard in test chambers.
Shredders are periodically seen on Portal 2 Test Chamber warning signs during the single-player campaign, though as they are unlit, they are not seen inside any Test Chambers.
In particular, this icon resides where the one for a piece of cake in Portal originally did.
Wheatley refers to this device as a "Spinny-blade-wall" as written in the subtitles.
Behind the scenes[]
The design is based on an industrial, two-roll, metal shredder.
