[edit] Overview
Very little is known about this world, as it has never been directly mentioned in any of the Half-Life games, except for a vague outburst by Arne Magnusson in the chapter To The White Forest.
Through the portal at the end of Half-Life 2, a red skyline of many Citadels can be seen. It is probable that this is the Combine Overworld.
What little information or speculation that can be made suggests that the Combine Overworld's climate is very different from that of Earth, as all Combine species seen so far feature a sort of breathing apparatus (The Advisor has a small black cup over its snout and the Combine Overwatch all feature obvious masks). This suggests that the Combine Overworld does not support oxygen or nitrogen, the primary gases of Earth's atmosphere. When Breen escaping through the portal at the end of Half-Life 2 is mentioned that he could not survive in the environment beyond the portal, an Advisor (presumably) says he could do so with a new 'host body' which Breen hesitantly accepts.
This raises interesting questions as to why the Combine are interested in occupying Earth. One answer to this is Combine's apparent need to drain Earth of its resources. Although this could be because it is a very old world that can no longer support the needs of the Combine. The age of the world is supported by their level of advanced technology, though they may have stolen it. It may also be possible that the Combine are testing humanity's combat usefulness in the form of the Trans-Human Overwatch (Combine Soldiers). This is hinted at during Dr. Breen's speech which can be heard in Nova Prospekt. Judging from Dr. Breen's speech, it can be inferred that the Combine may assimilate humanity into the Combine to use as "human synths" in future conquests if the Trans-Human Overwatch proves successful, or exterminate humanity if the Trans-Human forces prove ineffective.
[edit] Behind the scenes
In the original final showdown conversation at Breen's office, Breen was to mention the "Aleph universe" as the universe Eli and Alyx were to be sent;[1] this might be referring to the Combine Overworld. Interestingly, "Aleph" is the name of the main protagonist of Prospero, Valve's first game project, that the team probably recycled for it.[2] "Aleph" is also the name of the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet, which makes sense as the home-world is the "first" world.
