D. Mertz is a HECU recruit who was in the same dormitory as Adrian Shephard at Santego Military Base. He appears at the very start of the Opposing Force training chapter, Boot Camp. His name can be seen on his trunk. He is from Texas.

Like his Black Mesa scientist namesake, "D. Mertz" is a nod to Gearbox's David Mertz, who designed the maps of the Santego Military Base.[3][4]
