The M1 Abrams is a main battle tank produced in the United States. The M1 is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and former commander of the 37th Armored Regiment. It is a well armed, heavily armored, and highly mobile tank designed for modern armored ground warfare. Notable features of the M1 Abrams include the use of a powerful 1500 h.p. gas turbine engine, the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment for crew safety. It is one of the heaviest tanks in service, weighing in at close to 70 tons.
The M1 Abrams entered U.S. service in 1980, replacing the M60 Patton and M48A5. It did, however, serve for over a decade alongside the improved M60A3, which had entered service in 1978. Several main versions of the M1 Abrams have been deployed, including the M1 and the M1A1, latter incorporating improved armament, protection and electronics. These improvements, as well as periodic upgrades to older tanks have allowed this long-serving vehicle to remain in front-line service. It is the principal combat tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia
During Black Mesa Incident this tank was used by HECU. Later, M1 and M1A1 tanks also saw action during the Seven Hour War.
[edit] Appereances
In Half-Life the Abrams is first encountered in the chapter Surface Tension, providing fire support for a group of entrenched marines. Another one was stationed near the end of Forget About Freeman, blocking the entrance to the Lambda Complex. It differed from the first in a way that it fired a machine gun as well.
In Half-Life: Blue Shift, a single Abrams was encountered in the chapter Captive Freight, shortly after the .50 MG shootout. It was placed on a train wagon, with a nearby truck conveniently stocked with rockets. However, if the Abrams catched you there, it blew off the truck's back which can only be survived by crouching. Curiously, that Abrams only took damage from hits on the turret. Afterwards, it wasn't encountered for the rest of the game.
[edit] Tactics
The Abrams is completely bulletproof, so you will need explosives or experimental weaponry to destroy one. It will keep on firing you with it's cannon and machine gun, so use cover and shoot it with your RPG or Tau Cannon's secondary attack. If you get close enough, you can also drop some Satchel Charge's, but be sure to get clear of the blast!
