The Rocket Launcher, commonly referred to by the generic name RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade), is a shoulder-mounted, laser-guided rocket launcher used by the HECU and various other Half-Life characters.

It is acquired midway through the level "Surface Tension" in an alcove in a canyon wall (This is applies only for the Half-Life version). The player is given a chance to use the weapon after picking it up, as an HECU AH-64A Apache helicopter appears soon after (the chopper appears anyway even if the player ignores the weapon and goes forward, so it must be picked up and used to progress). The RPG is also used throughout the game to dispose of tanks/APCs like the Abrams and Bradley.

[edit] Use

The rocket launcher can be used for various purposes, especially when the player is up against a unit which has an extremly large amount or health or if they are traveling in groups. The rocket launcher must be used for long range attacks as short range attacks will include you in the blast radius. Do not use the rocket launcher for units that can be easily killed by other weapons. You also must avoid making sharp turns, as the rocket will stop following the laser path.

[edit] Trivia

  • You can use the launcher's laser-guide to guide rockets launched by others as well. One application in the single-player game is to guide rockets launched by HECU vehicles away from you into walls, or even back at them.[1]
  • This rocket launcher is not as advanced as the one given to Freeman in Half-Life 2 by Odessa Cubbage, as the rockets only travel where the laser points instead of turning to the target when they are deployed. The former ability has frustrated players, as RPGs can easily miss targets by flying into walls or sky.
  • The RPG also has a striking similarity to the German made Armbrust rocket launcher [2]
  • It could be noted that the Soldier's RPG from Team Fortress Classic looks very similar to the HL1 RPG.
