The Satchel Charge is a weapon featured in Half-Life and its expansions.

One of the most destructive items accessible to the player, it creates a powerful explosion with a remotely controlled detonation.

Overview[]

  • When a satchel charge is thrown with primary fire, the player equips the detonator. Using secondary fire while the detonator is active throws more charges, provided if the user has any. Using primary fire with the detonator active will cause them to all explode.
    • This has been changed in the 25th anniversary update: primary fire now always throws satchel charges, and secondary fire detonates the active charges. It also now takes more time to throw successive charges.
  • Notes:
    • They are too heavy to be thrown, which significantly reduces their range.
    • Damage inflicted in an explosion is identical to the HECU Laser Tripmine.
    • It is not possible to pick up dropped charges, find the detonator anywhere, or trigger them by gunshots.
    • The explosion has a radius of ~7 meters.
    • Only five charges may be active at any given moment.

Tactics[]

  • Be careful of the charge placement. Placed charges can't be retrieved and their ammo is extremely rare.
  • Due to its high damage, static nature and pitiful range, it is ideal for destroying vehicles such as the Bradley tank, or used as a trap for pursing enemies, though it faces competition with the HECU Laser Tripmine for the purpose.
  • It can be used to eliminate entire squads of unsuspecting HECU soldiers and other enemies. It is also good against weaker enemies though to get the most value one should only use it against swarms and save it for bigger hordes of foes.
  • Being an explosive, it can also be an effective counter to the Gargantua.
  • When detonating, one must be at least 7 meters away from the charges to avoid being hurt.

Trivia[]

  • In Half-Life: Opposing Force, a Satchel Charge at Earth or Xen can be remotely exploded by the denotator at the other world, Xen or Earth by teleporting through the Displacer Cannon even when the Displacer Cannon is empty indicating the Satchel Charge has a connection between Xen and Earth. This does not work in Half-Life: Blue Shift since it looks like the scientists move those. The player can explode the Satchel Charge during the few second interval when the player is transitioning to Xen and sees all green, then you will hear the explosion but the scientist will still be alive without the screen fading to show the message of the game assuming you perished.
  • Placing a satchel in some areas in the Section A-17 Prototype Labs, then teleporting to Xen may have those satchels somehow teleport to Xen with the player even though the satchels did not touch the portal. This is for sure a glitch.
