"Thanks for standing still, wanker." - The Sniper

The Sniper is one of the 9 classes that players may choose from in Team Fortress 2.

[edit] Description

In his former life as a tracker of dangerous game in the unforgiving Australian outback, the Sniper would spend months by himself. Prolonged isolation taught him a valuable lesson: You don't have to rely on other people if you never miss.

The Sniper is a support class. An Australian character with low damage tolerance, the sniper wears an Akubra similar to that worn by the Australian military, a vest, a team-coloured shirt, and yellow tinted shooter's glasses. Carrying a bolt-action sniper rifle, the sniper is able to kill all classes instantly with a shot to the head, although he must "charge" his rifle in order for the shot to be fatal against tougher targets, such as the Heavy. Charging occurs automatically while aiming with the scope, and a percentage bar on the right side of the crosshair indicates the amount that the rifle has been charged. However, the rifle leaves a visible, team-coloured laser dot where it is aimed which can reveal the location of the sniper to enemy players.

The Sniper is one of the six classes previewed by Valve's "Meet the Classes" ad campaign. In it the RED Sniper drives an RV (because he likes to "camp") and discusses his job and how much his parents do not care for it, in between patiently assassinating most of the BLU Team.[1]

[edit] Tactics

  • Aim for the head. Target Medics ahead of Soldiers and Heavies. As they are very difficult to hit, Scouts are best left to other classes to deal with; however, a single fully charged body shot is enough to kill both him, the Engineer, other Snipers and the Spy. Careless Engineers and their creations make excellent targets.
  • With low damage tolerance and very poor melee attack, Snipers should avoid close quarters combat if at all possible. Position yourself somewhere that overlooks an open area. Beware other Snipers, who almost certainly will be positioned at the opposite end of said open area.
  • As good as a place might be for a Sniper nest, do not stay in one spot for too long. Every person you kill knows exactly where you are; moving around will restore your element of surprise, and stop your victims from exacting easy revenge.
  • Snipers are soft targets for Spies, as Snipers are usually too wrapped up in what they are doing to notice the latters' approach. Keeping aware of your surroundings, and entrenching yourself in a place enemies cannot get to easily (such as the upper floor of 2Fort) are good counter measures. If you do see a suspected Spy approaching, remember that you've got a bigger knife than he does.
  • If an enemy manages to get close to you, you can use your sub-machine gun to defend yourself, however, do not rely on it completely.
