A Superportal is far more powerful than a normal portal. It is spawned after catastrophic quantum events such as the meltdown of a Citadel core, and can be used to ferry entire armies from one dimension to another. This was presumably how the Combine overwhelmed Earth's forces during the Seven Hour War, and they planned to do so once more after the City 17 uprising began, but were foiled by Arne Magnusson, Eli Vance, Isaac Kleiner, and other scientists at the Resistance's White Forest base.

Additionally, superportals spawn catastrophic Portal Storms in the surrounding area, making it incredibly dangerous to anyone near the superportal. The only superportal seen so far was created by the Combine, making good use of Gordon Freeman's destruction of the dark fusion reactor at the top of the City 17 Citadel. The release of massive amounts of displacement energy caused a spacetime anomaly at the location of the reactor, essentially a small Resonance Cascade. Because the explosion disabled all other reactors on Earth as well, the Combine was forced to cause a dark energy flare which released enough energy to transform the anomaly into a Superportal, at the cost of losing the Citadel.

[edit] Destruction

At the end of Episode Two, Arne Magnusson's rocket is launched by Freeman. The rocket activates at or near the portal and links up with satellite array that were launched at Black Mesa and have presumably lain dormant ever since. The rocket taps into these satellites and a xenium resonator neutralizes the portal. It is uncertain what the fate of the rocket was, which may have launched along with Dr. Kleiner's pet Headcrab, Lamarr (which may have been the noted "payload anomaly of eight and a half pounds").
