Thumper
From Combine OverWiki, the English Half-Life Wikia
The Thumper is a large, towering device used to send pulsing thumps through the ground, keeping Antlions away. While Antlions are normally attracted to ground vibrations, they avoid thumpers, likely because thumpers overload their senses or imitate a larger creature.
[edit] Usage
The Combine use thumpers extensively in the Coastal regions, placing them in strategic areas to stop Antlions from accessing important structures or areas.
In the original Half-Life, similar machines appear on Xen. While their structural appearance is different, both emit thumps through the ground. This is probably why no Antlions appear on Xen even though that is where they originate from; most likely, these Xen thumpers were set up by Vortigaunts or the Nihilanth's forces to keep the Antlions almost completely underground, thus protecting Xen's other inhabitants from their violent, aggressive behavior.
[edit] Technical Information
The thumper is a very effective device for defending oneself from Antlions. Thumpers are used by both the resistance and Combine forces. Combine forces often refer to the thumpers as "Restrictors". A thumper must be powered by some sort of power generator in order to operate. To turn off a specific thumper, look for a power button on the generator or device itself and press it to deactivate it. Thumpers use three plates of a metal (presumably titanium) and controls them by use of magnetics. The sheets of metal are pulled up in a one-by-one fashion, and then are dropped together with excessive force, sending a powerful vibration through the ground which can easily overload the senses of antlions. It is unknown what kind of an effect these thumpers have on Antlion Guards.
[edit] Nova Prospekt
Nova Prospekt is a very important Combine base on The Coast so it is surrounded by thumpers to keep the Antlion hordes at bay. When Gordon Freeman attacked Nova Prospekt with the Antlions at his control, he had to disable a number of thumpers to allow his Antlions to assist.
The player can overhear radio transmissions in the bunkers from the local commander to the the base defense bunkers directing the forces to "reactive your perimeter restrictors and report". They were unsuccessful as Freeman killed all the defenders he encountered as he forced his way into the facility and the Antlions would have taken hold of the area once it was cleared - this is later confirmed by the Combine Dispatcher which declares "Overwatch acknowledges critical exogen breach in zone Nova Prospekt..." It is useful to note the speed with which the Antlions take hold in the facility, breaking into the outer prison areas in overwhelming numbers in a matter of hours after the thumpers are deactivated.
