The Vortigaunt Shepherd[1] is a Vortigaunt first appearing in the Half-Life 2 chapter Sandtraps after Gordon Freeman has defeated the Antlion Guard outside the Vortigaunt Camp. After defeating the Guard, the trainer comes out and extracts the Bugbait so that Gordon can use it. The trainer then shows him how to use the Bugbait so that Gordon will be able to manipulate the Antlions to aid him in his journey to rendezvous with Alyx Vance in Nova Prospekt. After they enter the Vortigaunt Camp, the Vort states he and his brethren are honored by Gordon due to his slaying of the Nihilanth. So after Gordon has completed domesticating a small pack of Antlions, the Antlion trainer bids farewell to Gordon and tells the gate operator to open the gate so that Gordon can continue his journey to Nova Prospekt.

He may have also trained some Resistance members since they are heard to say things like "I swear by the pheropods myself" and, "You're a regular Antlion now".
